For reflection:

  1. In Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says “You have heard it said… But I tell you…” six different times. Why do you think Jesus is trying to communicate by saying that?
  2. In today’s passage, Jesus says: “Anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.” This sounds harsh, doesn’t it? What do we do with this statement? What does that statement mean to you?
  3. What does reconciliation and genuinely seeking forgiveness look like? How might we approach settling matters quickly with our adversary?
  4. How might “building a fence” be helpful for us? In what ways might “building a fence” be a hindrance?
  5. In what ways might we be better able to “keep tabs on our intent”?
  6. What does “making room for grace” look like for us? …for others?
  7. What might “paying the wages of justice” look like in our lives?
