About The Intention Church
Who Are We?
The Intention Church is a gathering of believers who, though scattered physically, are united in commitment. Our church is committed to following the narrow way of Jesus through humility, justice seeking, peacemaking, and embodying love.
As a church, we intend to serve as a sign of the reign of God, wherein grace leads us to a sense of inclusivity that continues to overcome boundaries instead of constructing them. As such, we welcome everyone into full participation at all levels, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation.
Although we endeavor to be a church that is part of God’s movement (instead of a monument to God), we are a church that has been shaped by tradition. The two traditions that have most shaped The Intention Church are the prophetic tradition of the historic Black church and the Anabaptist tradition.
Our roots in the Black church leave us committed to truth telling. The Anabaptist tradition leads us committed to being peacemakers. As a result of that second tradition, The Intention Church was founded in partnership with the Central District Conference of the Mennonite Church USA denomination and Mennonite World Conference.
Our Vision
In a world in which people work jobs online, meet spouses online, and find belonging online, we want to help people follow Jesus online. We aim to be forward thinking in realizing that (for better or worse) a lot of our life happens online now.
If Paul was able to minister to and with scattered people in the first century, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to do the same in the 21st century.
While our approach may be intentionally different, we aim to foster spiritual growth of our congregation and the pursuit of wholeness for all of our communities by meeting real-life needs and identifying, developing, and empowering spiritual gifts.
Collectively, we aim to embody God in flesh.
