For reflection:

  1. What is a treasure? Is it something you can hold or count or can it be something else?
  2. How do we discern in the moment the difference between earthly treasures and treasures in Heaven?
  3. We all need money to pay our monthly bills and food for our families. Where do you draw the distinction between your budget and stored treasures?
  4. How does our valuing of treasures like this help us to be better brothers/sisters to our neighbors and better disciples?
  5. Can earthly treasures be misused? If so, how? Can heavenly treasures be used well? If so, how?

Digging Deeper:

  1. How does releasing our debts (Deuteronomy 15:1-2) help us, and our brothers, to keep from storing treasures here on earth?
  2. How is abstaining from earthly treasure gathering similar to fasting?
  3. People who live under the thumb of others with more power – what are their treasures? How can they give up those treasures if they are trying to follow Jesus?
